KALAMAZOO COLLEGE

I was approached by the Public Relations and Publications Department of Kalamazoo College in 2001 to help them develop a new identity system for the Kalamazoo College Hornets identity, a system that would represent the sports teams and athletic-based organizations, but also be able to integrate with the other academic based organizations and overall identity of the college. I worked with them for nearly a full year developing the Hornet mark, finding a form that was engaging, accurate and able to work on a business card but also 20 feet wide on a gymnasium floor or football field. I also worked to make the color system consistent and adaptable, but to also simplify it so that it was easy to use and maintain, and to be able to accommodate a wide variety of alternate mediums (fabric, metal, plastics).

I was also responsible with making an open ended system that could be added to as needed, and that could accommodate an ever expanding roster of teams and organizations needing to use the mark. The system was updated and refreshed in 2012 with new word marks and lock ups for all departments and schools within the college, again being open-ended to constant updating.

HAMO and HANNAH HORNET MASCOTS

Working with the public relations and publications department of Kalamazoo College, I helped develop the mascot characters of Hamo and Hana Hornet, a male and female cartoon version of the Kalamazoo College mascots, to be used for various needs where the official Hornet icon logo did not work. I developed a simple, clean illustrational style for the mascot designs to keep them easy to print and imprint on a very wide variety of materials and objects. We also thought that it was important to have a consistent visual representation of Hamo and Hana, even with the more humorous and spirited representations, but to also strive to make them as cross-representational as possible to the wide variety of race, creed and ethnicity that is the student population of Kalamazoo College.
