PAUL SIZER COMIC E-NEWSLETTER
December 28, 2007
Hello friends, fans and retailers.
Just a quick note to say "Happy Holidays!" and "Happy New Year".
2007 was a great year to learn, work and create. I've been working hard on my new graphic novel, "B.P.M.", and 2008 will see it out in the public domain! I'm working with some new ways to share this book with a wider audience and to get people excited about it and the music that inspires it. How will I do that, you ask?

1. BPM NEW YEAR'S CARD
A New Year's card for you, from Roxy (the main character of BPM), me and Cafe Digital Studios:

2. ROXY'S "Best of 2007 Mixtape" iMix AT ITUNES
Yup, you can go to iTunes and purchase Roxy's mixtape of her favorite tunes from 2007 at the iTunes Store as an iMix. 19 songs of electropop, dance, funk, ambient, house and techno for you to dance into the new year with, courtesy of Roxy and iTunes. It's a great way to check out new music and to LEGALLY get it for your own MP3 collection! It's just so simple:
Here's the link for the iMix: ROXY's iMIX

So Long Brody...

Last Thursday, my male cat Brody passed away. He was 15 years old, and had been of declining health for the last 6 months. He had a thyroid problem which caused him to lose a lot of weight (at top weight, around 15 pounds of cat), even though his "intake and output" was exactly the same.

I was glad I was able to be home with him when he passed. He went quickly, and Jane and I sat with him in his final moments. We took him out to my parent's farm to bury him later in the day.

He was a big dumb lovable pussycat, and I'll miss him much. Oh, he was named after graphic designer Neville Brody, one of my design "heroes".
His sister Basia (named after the Polish pop/jazz singer) is still in great health, but she does seem to notice he's not around anymore. I also find myself automatically doing my mental checklisting for 2 feline forms when getting ready to leave the house or at bedtime.

Jane wrote a very nice blog entry on this as well: Jane's Brody entry

With Sizer's "Great Graphic Novels for Teens" award for MOPED ARMY, and Irwin's second VOGELEIN book being released, the comic creators decided it was time to take the plunge and meet over 25,000 librarians at this convention. "We've all done years of comic conventions; now we want to show our books to a new and very receptive audience on the national level. We're very excited at the potential exposure this conference will give us, and we want to show with our newest and strongest material."

MOPED ARMY on 2007 GREAT GRAPHIC NOVELS FOR TEENS LIST

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE POSTING AND RELEASE:
"MOPED ARMY" MAKES 2007 A.L.A. "GREAT GRAPHIC NOVELS FOR TEENS" LIST

Paul Sizer's "MOPED ARMY" graphic novel has been awarded a place on the American Library Association's "Great Graphic Novels for Teens" list for 2007. The awards list was finalized and announced at the ALA's annual Midwinter Conference being held this week in Seattle, Washington. This is the first year for the "Great Graphic Novels for Teens" awards list, due to the increased presence and popularity of graphic novels in library systems across the country. The awards drew nominations from all genres of graphic novels, and the "Great Graphic Novels for Teens" committee members had 143 nominations to debate, discuss and choose from. The committee had their final meeting at the ALA Midwinter Conference to edit down the nominations down to a final list of winners. When the dust settled, 57 graphic novels made the final list of the best for 2007. Also of note, MOPED ARMY was one of the only winners from a self publisher. This news follows MOPED ARMY being named by Voice of Youth Advocates reviewer Kat Kan as one of the top 24 graphic novels reviewed in the last 12 years for VOYA Magazine. For a PDF link to Kat Kan's "The Double Dozen" article in this month's VOYA magazine, click here:
"The Double Dozen"

"I'm ecstatic that "MOPED ARMY" made it to the final list!" said writer/artist Paul Sizer. "This list is so important for books that want to find a place in libraries. Graphic novels have become more and more a mainstay in popular culture; TIME Magazine's "Book of the Year" was the graphic novel "Fun Home" by Alison Bechdel, and Gene Luan Yang's graphic novel "American Born Chinese" just got the ALA's Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature (the first time a graphic novel has won this award). This is the year of the graphic novel breaking into mainstream "best of" lists that award traditional books. I've gotten such amazing support from librarians from all over the country for "MOPED ARMY", and making this list is the cherry on top of everything!"

Sizer is also announcing that he will be exhibiting at this year's ALA Conference in Washington D.C. in June. He, along with wife and fellow comic creator Jane Irwin (VOGELEIN) and comic author Jim Ottaviani (DIGNIFYING SCIENCE, FALLOUT), will be exhibiting in the graphic novel pavilion of the massive yearly convention.

PAUL SIZER COMIC E-NEWSLETTER
NOVEMBER 20, 2006
Hello friends, fans and retailers.
Thanksgiving is almost here, and in addition to my annual venture into getting one year older (yet strangely, not always wiser), it's time for some more news from the halls of Cafe Digital publishing studios. Please don't step on any elves, and pass the gravy!1. BKV DOES EXIST, ACTUALLY REALLY NICE GUY...
Got to meet and hear superstar comic writer Brian K. Vaughan (Runaways, Y: The Last Man, Pride of Baghdad, Ex Machina) speak at an author visit in Dearborn Michigan this weekend. The event was masterminded and sponsored by Dan and Katie Merritt, the nice owners of Green Brain Comics, just voted the "Best Comic Book Selection" by the Detroit Metro Times!

It was great to hear Brian talk about writing "Pride of Baghdad", his past comic work he'd like to forget, and his attempts to screw up "Runaways" as much as possible before handing it off to writer Joss Whedon! (Don't worry kids, he said he's seen Whedon's first "Runaways" script and it kicks much butt)

And to top it all off, I got to go out and have dinner with Brian, Dan and Katie, and Mr. Vaughan, classy dude that he is, picked up the check for dinner! What a guy! Needless to say, a stray copy of MOPED ARMY made it into his hands for a long plane ride home. Hopefully it will at least aid in him falling asleep on the plane.

2. NEXT SIZER CONVENTION STOP: MID OHIO CON 2006
After stuffing one's self with turkey, there's only one way to work that off: go to a comic convention! My annual final con of the year is back again, as the MID OHIO CON 2006 debuts in it's swanky new location in downtown Columbus! I'll be there with tons of LITTLE WHITE MOUSE, MOPED ARMY and anything else needed for those perfect stocking stuffers for the comic fan in your life!
For more info on MID OHIO CON check it out here: LINK

Meet Zoe (ZO-EEE, I can't make the cool umlaut over the "e"), our new dog we just rescued from the Battle Creek Animal Shelter.

(And no, she's not blind, she just blinks like Jane does...)
She is a labrador/corgi mix, found as a stray in Jackson, MI, and sent to Battle Creek where Jane found her online. She's come from a tough background, and little by little she's getting used to not being on the run.

...but plenty busy!
Man, my brain is not plugged in for blogging, but hey, it means I'm busy with other stuff, right?
Anyways, you may have seen this image other places in my site, but here's my first poster that actually admits I plan to have BPM out in 2007 sometime!

And truthfully, it WILL be out, as I have just confirmed I'll be doing a digital release show in Kalamazoo at the Center for New Media's digital gallery in May of 2007. It will be in conjunction with the yearly Kalamazoo Animation Festival Internation. More on that as it firms up on dates and times, but I'm really excited about this, as this gallery has big screen plasma screen TVs for artwork, and the place is wired for sound, which means we can have the placing booming with good music during the premiere of images for BPM (maybe some live DJ action as well!)
More soon!

PAUL SIZER COMIC E-NEWSLETTER
SEPTEMBER 29, 2006
Hello friends, fans and retailers.
Here's three quick items for you to absorb and use only for the powers of good, not evil...

1. SIZER COMIC ART EXHIBITION DURING OCTOBER ART HOP
As ill-advised as it is to give me more public exposure, the nice folks at the ever hip and industrial Smart Shop Gallery (SMARTSHOP) are taking that chance. Starting during the monthly Kalamazoo Art Hop (KALAMAZOO ART HOP) FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 5pm-9pm, I will have an exhibition of my comic art from the LITTLE WHITE MOUSE and MOPED ARMY graphic novels and comics. And as a first, the art pages themselves will be for sale! I'll be there from 6-9pm on that Friday, signing books and being arty. The gallery will be open that night from 6pm - 11pm with art, refreshments and bands, so it's your Friday night entertainment needs all in one place!
Also, any local branch Moped Army riders are encouraged to please show up with your bikes and make the place more hip with your presence!

2. NEXT CONVENTION STOP: MOTOR CITY COMICON FALL
Catch me in Artist Alley for the fall edition of the Motor City Comicon. (MOTOR CITY COMICON)

3. NEW LITTLE WHITE MOUSE REVIEW
The nice folks at BookLoons gave the LITTLE WHITE MOUSE OMNIBUS Edition a very nice review! Check it out: LWM REVIEW
Thanks for the support, Lance!
