A few new newsbytes from the ongoing BPM Perfect Beat Promotional Tour!

1. B.P.M. ON THIS WEEK'S "COMIC GEEK SPEAK" PODCAST
"B.P.M." gets the star treatment on the latest episode of the Comic Geek Speak podcast series
Man, these guys work fast! I just did the interview over the phone last night, and the podcast is already up and ready to download!
Here's the show page link:
COMIC GEEK SPEAK Episode 545

2. NEW PHOTOS FROM THE AUTHOR TALK
Good friend and amazing photographer Thomas Deater took some killer shots of me during my author talk/DJ demo/book signing/reading at the Kalamazoo Public Library in September.
Tom has been teaching himself black and white digital photography over the last few years and has developed a killer eye, so I asked if he would shoot the event.
I finally got my lazy butt around, picked out the best of nearly 300 (!) shots and posted them as a Flickr album that you can check out:
TOM DEATER B.P.M. PHOTOS
Check out more of Tom's work at his home site: LINK

3. "B.P.M." HITS THE SHELVES NOVEMBER 19
Cross your fingers; "B.P.M." is set to hit the shelves of your local comic book stores in the US this Wednesday, November 19 if all goes according to plan.

More soon. Thanks to everyone for the tons of support you've given. As always, it is appreciated!

Hey, I know this is incredibly mundane (and that NO one reads my blog except for spambots), but if you've called in the last week to our home number and gotten a busy signal ALL THE TIME, please let Jane and I know. There may have been a fiberoptic cable severed in our district that may be causing this problem. It should be fixed by now, but just in case, drop me an email if you've encountered this problem.

HELL YES I VOTED!

7:15 am, at the polls.
Huge line of people, but got Jane and I got through really quick, maybe 25 minutes total.

I grabbed the black pen and voted the Hell out of that ballot! I can't remember being so pumped for an election, but I guess that happens when the next chapter of American history gets decided today.

So if you're reading this post; vote. And do not screw this one up. We need a change. REALLY. This is no joke, we are headed down a really bad road if the American people assume that everything will take care of itself. Because it won't. You have to make a choice and make it count. So get the hell out and cast your votes. Now!

And as always, Warren Ellis states things far better than I could:

Last email of the day before leaving work:
"Hello Paul,
Robin Brenner here -- I know we've spoken a few tiles at ALA, and I'm very happy to be emailing you today with good news.
I am writing to you today with my official hat on as the Chair of the Great Graphic Novels for Teens Committee to let you know one of your title's has been nominated for consideration by our committee.
Your book, B.P.M.,has been nominated for the Great Graphic Novels for Teens Selection list which will come out in January of 2009."

Well, HOT DAMN! THAT'S news I can take to the bank! I love librarians; they support books like crazy, and this list is gold for someone like me. MOPED ARMY made the list in 2007, so here's hoping BPM does as well for 2009!
Also, a cool photo of me and a young fan from my BPM Author Talk at the Kalamazoo Public Library last month! Note: she's the cool one, I'm the dorky one in the Utilikilt!

Sizer Author Talk Video/Photos

All righty, here's the video proof of me either making an artistic statement or making a colossal fool of myself for the sake of B.P.M.: my beatmixing demo of finding the common ground between Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Something" and Nitzer Ebb's "Murderous (Instrumental Version)" during my author talk at the Kalamazoo Public Library on September 30. Luckily, I was playing for the easiest audience on Earth, most of whom were just impressed I knew what a record was.

NOTE TO REAL DJ'S: My beatmixing skills are laughable to actual DJs, so please do not assume I am passing myself off as a turntable master; I'm just a cat who digs the dance music. Thanks for not throwing beer bottles at me.

SPX 2008

Awesome! That's my con wrap-up report from this year's Small Press Expo in Bethesda MD. My lovely wife Jane did a bang-up write up, so in the interest of piggy-backing on her hard work, here's her convention report.

The specifics of my con experience overlapped Jane's; great sales, really positive feedback on current projects and meeting new fans in unexpected places. Mine took place mostly in meeting DJs who also like comics! A number of fans introduced themselves to me as DJs who were glad to see a book about their music and life. I met a pod of local Washington DC DJs who spun in local clubs within the very active and diverse DC scene, one I know of and respect. DC has always had a great club scene, so the possibility of getting BPM in front of these folks is a huge plus! I spent as much time talking about music as I did talking about comics, which is fine by me.

And to walk away from a con with table and airfare paid for (plus a little bit more) is just mind-boggling.

This is the first installment of an 8 part podcast series hosted by Mike Pfieffer, also known as Mikel OD, the brains behind "Most People Are DJs" an excellent music podcast from the Detroit area. Mike has been a long time supporter of my work, and when Mike heard that my new graphic novel was about electronic music, he came up with the brilliant idea of the two of us collaborating on a multi-part project to have me talk in depth about "BPM" and all the art. What started out as a simple podcast interview grew into a audio-visual videocast, allowing people to SEE what I was talking about. I'm really happy with how this turned out, and it gives me a chance to nerd out about all kinds of details about "BPM" and its creation.

Getting ready for Tuesday

Very busy week ahead, but in a good way: Tuesday is my BPM Author event at the Kalamazoo Public Library, and I've been rehearsing my best reading voice for this, as well as practicing on the "wheels of Steel" to get my beatmixing skills up to an acceptable level for doing in front of people. Then, on Friday, I'm off to the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, MD with Jane for 2 days of indy comic goodness. Wish me luck, I'm going to collapse when all this is over...

Also, nice blog post from the UK about BPM:

Another nice mention on a music blog: LINK
and another: LINK

Poster for my upcoming launch party/author talk at the Kalamazoo Public Library. We're gonna get loud in the library, lots of music and images flashing around, so come prepared to dance, look and listen. I'll also be selling the first copies of "BPM" available to the general public. Come on down if you're local!
Tuesday, September 30 from 6:30-8:30 at the main downtown branch!
